SULAIR Receives Conservation Award

At its annual meeting on June 12, 2004, in Portland, Oregon, The American Institute for Conservation of Historical and Artistic Works (AIC) presented SULAIR its Distinguished Award for Advancement of the Field of Conservation.

The announcement of the award to Stanford University Libraries elicited enthusiastic cheers and a spontaneous standing ovation. In her presentation remarks, Shelley Sturman, Chair of AIC Awards Committee and Head of Object Conservation at the National Gallery of Art, remarked, "The service provided by The Stanford University Libraries in facilitating communication among members of the conservation field is nothing short of remarkable."

She made special mention of the Conservation DistList and Conservation On-Line (CoOL), http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/, both of which are free services provided by SULAIR through the extraordinary commitment of Walter Henry of our Preservation Department. The mention of Walter renewed even louder cheers and applause. Connie Brooks and Catherine Tierney accepted the award on behalf of Stanford.

Other recipients of this prestigious award include the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Getty Grant Program, the American Academy in Rome, and the Leo & Karen Guttman Foundation.
