About EndNote
Use EndNote to:
- import citations from online databases using import filters
- retrieve references from some online services directly into EndNote via connection files
- store, manage, and search your personal library of citations
- insert citations into word processing documents and then compile a bibliography for those
in-text citations in any format

Create and Organize Your Own Database
- Direct Export
Several online databases allow direct exporting of citations from the database’s interface
into EndNote. Details vary for each database. General directions are to select your citations and then
click on an Export button. EndNote will launch, and citations will load into your desired EndNote
library.
- Import Filters
To import citations into EndNote, a filter usually is required. Filters for many databases are
included with your EndNote software. Others can be freely downloaded from the
EndNote filter website (http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp).
Place the downloaded filter in the “Filters” subfolder of EndNote. The filter maps the
information in each downloaded reference to the corresponding fields in EndNote.
- Connection Files
Connection Files provide an easy way to import search results into EndNote. The connection file
allows EndNote to identify which online database to connect to, where the database is located,
and what search options are available for it. Several connection files are included with your EndNote
software. Others are also freely available for downloading at the
EndNote connection file website (http://www.endnote.com/support/enconnections-terms.asp).
EndNote can only connect directly to databases that support the Z39.50 standard. Access to
Stanford-licensed databases via the connection files may not work from off-campus, depending upon
various factors, such as your ISP, firewalls, the database vendor, etc.
Databases that include Z39.50 access include the Stanford University Libraries catalog (Socrates)
and the California Digital Library (formerly MELVYL) catalog.

- EndNote X1: Use the connection file included with the EndNote software. For step-by-step
directions see
Cubberley Library’s EndNote on Mac OS X(https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/services/tutorials/endnote).
- EndNote X and earlier: Use the
custom connection file(https://www.stanford.edu/~mjockers/limited/Media/StanfordCatalog.enz).
