Religious Studies
While collecting in Religious manuscripts has not been a primary
focus of Special Collections' collecting in the past, the Department
nevertheless has a rich treasure-trove of mateials for researchers.
Holdings includes 20th Century materials such as the Allen Ginsberg
Papers, 1937-1994 (M0733), specifically Series 9: Religious materials,
pertaining mainly to Buddhism; the Salo W. Baron Papers, ca. 1900-1980
(M0580) , documenting Jewish religious practices from the early
modern era through the 1930's; Curtis Martin Galt Papers, 1922 -
1947 (M0600), relating the Christian missionary movement in China;
the W. Y. (Walter Yeeling) Evans-Wentz Papers, 1894-1961 (M0278),
dealing with Tibetan Buddhism; the Papers of Archibishop Georgii
Grabbe, ca. 1930-1995, who was the Secretary of the Synod of the
Russian Orthodox Church Abroad from 1931 to 1986.
The Manuscript Division also contains antiphonaries and missals
from the Catholic Church from the Medieval and early modern eras.
Curator Wojciech Zalewski is the primary individual responsible
for selecting manuscript collections that fall into this area. For
