John Steinbeck Collection
Special Collections holds copies of every Steinbeck novel and many
collected works of his fiction in their first edition, often in
fine condition with a fine dust jacket where issued. While extensive
and complete, the earlier acquired books were supplemented by a
gift from Wells Fargo Bank in 1999 that included books signed by
the author to his sister, Esther. The department also holds galley-proofs
of The Red Pony, The Forgotten Village, The
Moon Is Down, Cannery Row, and Steinbeck: A Life
in Letters.
Generally, these books can be found in Socrates by searching Steinbeck
as Author and limiting library to Special Collections. Specifically,
the Wells Fargo gift can be found using “Wells Fargo Steinbeck
Collection” in a keyword search.
For extensive discriptions of the various other Steinbeck holdings
at Stanford, see the Steinbeck
page on the SULAIR American Literary Studies site.
