Ethnic Identity in the United States

The interdisciplinary nature of Ethnic Identity means that relevant materials are dispersed throughout the general collections of Stanford University Libraries. Use Socrates, Stanford's online catalog, to locate books and other materials. Use the library's print or electronic indexes to locate journal articles and published papers.

Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Dictionaries, etc. can provide useful descriptions, overviews, and lists of recommended reading on a topic.

The African American Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center E185 A253 1993) A six volume set on the subject of African American life, contains bibliographies and essays on variety of topics including miscegenation.

Encyclopedia of Southern Culture (Green Library Information Center and Stacks F209 .E53 1989) Contains chapters on Black Life (including entries on Appalachian Blacks, Dance, Indians and Blacks, Miscegenation, Race Relations, and Slave Culture) as well as Ethnic Life (Including Caribbeans, Indians, Cajuns and Creoles, Asian groups, Lumbees, Mexicans, and Travelers).

Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America (Green Library Information Center & Bender E184 .A1 G14 1995) This two volume set contains over 100 signed essays addressing a distinct ethnic, ethno-religious, or Native American group in the United States. Each essay focuses on the group's experiences in the United States, specifically in the areas of acculturation and assimilation, family and community dynamics, language, religion, politics and government and significant contributions.

Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, 1982 (Green Library Information Center & Stacks E184 .A1H35) Contains informative essays on an exhaustive number (106) ethnic groups, as well as essays with themes such as "American Identity and Americanization," Assimilation and Pluralism," "Education," "Folklore," "Family Patterns," "Immigration," Intermarriage," "Language," "Leadership," "Loyalties," Politics," Prejudice," "Religion," and "Survey Research."

Jewish-American History and Culture: an Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center E184 .J5 J48 1992) Surveys the Jewish experience in the United States. Includes essays about Colonial American Jewry, Holocaust Literature, Jewish organizations, Comics and Comedy, Jews in Hollywood, Black Jews as well as many biographical entries.

Multiculturalism in the United States: A Comparative Guide to Acculturation and Ethnicity (HASRC E184 .A1 .M85 1992) Contains essays that describe the acculturation experience of many groups including African Americans, German Americans, Irish Americans, Scandinavian Americans, Polish Americans, Jewish Americans, Chinese Americans, Italian Americans, and Mexican Americans.

Bibliography of Native North Americans (16th C+) citations of works published from the 16th century to the present.

• Hapa Issues Forum page. Hapa comes from the Hawaiian phrase hapa haole which means "half white/foreigner." Once considered derogatory, it is now a simple way to describe a person of partial Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry.
