Current African newspapers are in Green Library,
the Information Center area, first floor.
Find records for the latest issues. Go to the Newspaper Registration site and click on Newspapers. Put in the paper's name or the country name in the Search box. The very latest issues are held in the Green Library Information Center Newspaper section (and are not listed in Socrates/Searchworks).
Some African newspapers are treated like Magazines / Jounals (for example Namibia Economist)
and current issues will be in the Current Periodicals
section, Information Center, first floor, Green
Library.
FOR OLDER ISSUES, check all three sources.
1. Searchworks / SOCRATES, Stanford’s online catalogs. In Socrates, use the Combined Search. For the Everything line, put in the Country; then put in the newspaper title in the Periodical Title line. If you don't know the title, you can sometimes get results (though not always complete) by putting in the Everything line, the country. On the Subject line, put in newspapers. (You get fuller results than just putting newspapers <country> such as newspapers ghana in the Subject line).
2. the Hoover Newspaper Catalog may have titles not found through Socrates/Searchworks.
Some newspapers on film may only be listed in the Hoover Newspaper Catalog. (Hoover is Open M-F, 8-5)
3. see the spreadsheet list of newspapers in SAL-Newark and by Title. Holdings information may not be accurate. If you find a title of interest, look it up in Socrates/Searchworks. The lists above Do Not include our newspapers on microfilm. Check Socrates/Searchworks for newspapers on microfilm.
Titles not listed as Air Mail come by Sea Mail
and may be 3-6 months old.
Titles designated Microfilm Only are only on
microfilm and will be several months old.
For newspapers on the web, see Africa South of the Sahara - Newspapers by Country
Newspapers Through Interlibrary Loan.
See the CAMP/CRL catalog and AFRINUL (click on the link African Newspapers Union List. AFRINUL holdings are not complete however.)
