New British documents finding aids:
- Great Britain. Public Record Office. Kew
lists: the microfiche edition, 1986. The
Kew lists include, in alphanumeric order
of class code, all the class lists of records
normally kept, and made available for public
inspection, at the Public Record Office at
Kew. Classes normally kept at the Public
Record Office, Chancery Lane, are not included.
In other words, we've got good coverage of
CO, FO, HO and Cab., but none of E., SP.
Or put another way, we're pretty good on
19th-20th century files, but little to no
coverage on pre-19th century files. LOCATION:

all House of Commons parliamentary papers

of Commons parliamentary papers 1801-1900,
the House of Commons decennial indexes
covering the period 1900-1979, and data
from the Parliamentary Online Information

...students of the past are also limited
by their raw material. They depend...on a complicated
administrative machinery which supplies them
with the tools of their trade in the forms of
files, memoranda, debates and commission reports.
The evidence produced, selected, and preserved
by administrators, government statisticians,
archivists, filing clerks, and record managers
helps to determine the very nature of subsequent
research. (1)
This guide emphasizes (but is not restricted
to) the rich collection for Africa of British
documents in the Stanford libraries. There is
a separate guide covering
bibliographies of official publications of African
countries and former African colonies.
You will find three major classes of British
documents covered here: published material (as
in the Parliamentary Papers); printed but not published material (the Confidential Print); and other archival material (as a variety
of Colonial
Office and Foreign Office records). Stanford
owns this material either in print or microform
(and sometimes in both formats). Additionally,
the library owns the great compilations of documents
retrospectively created documenting British foreign
relations:
- Great Britain.

Other printed editions and compilations of
documents have been created for different purposes.
A recent example is the first Africa volume (Ghana)
in the British documents on the end of the
empire series. This kind of material can
normally be identified in online library catalogs
by the genre of search "FIND SUBJECT KENYA SOURCES",
etc. (as well as of course by means of bibliographies
such as those in The Cambridge history of
the British Empire, 8 v.). Examples:

particular issue. See p.xiii of the introduction
