Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa / Institut pour les Droits Humains et le Développement en Afrique - Internships: "Interns coming from outside Africa pay into a fund for the support of African interns, as follows: $250 per month for those who stay three months; $200 per month for those who stay up to seven months; and a flat $1500 for those who stay eight months or longer. Such interns will have to cover all their living and other expenses while in the Gambia, including health insurance."; Qualifications: Interns must be computer literate and fluent in either English or French, with working knowledge of the other language. Arabic or Portuguese language skills are an advantage. Interns may be of any academic or national background. Those with legal training will work in the Institute's litigation and capacity building programmes. Those with training in journalism, public relations, social sciences, fund-raising, graphic design, computers and web page maintenance, library and cataloguing skills are also welcome." KickStart (formerly ApproTEC): An NGO founded in Kenya in 1991, works in Kenya, Tanzania, Mali. "Each summer, ApproTEC has a very limited number of internships at its offices in Nairobi, Kenya. These non-paying positions are for experienced business, economics, and engineering design graduate students or professionals. ApproTEC assists small business people "to identify viable business opportunities, to access the technologies required to launch the new enterprises and to widely market new products." Example: Designed a water pump which has helped Kenyans grow food more efficiently and profitably. Has an African Service Fellowship (and Haas description), a joint program with the Center for African Studies, for students interested in working on social and economic issues in Africa, particularly southern Africa. This is a full-time nine-week, internship (typically done in summer) with an organization in southern Africa. The Haas Summer Fellowship enables students to design their own program in Africa.
