Quarterly Index of African Periodical Literature (Library of Congress Office, Nairobi)
As of March 31, 2013 moves to AfricaBib in Leiden, Netherlands. Find citations to articles published from the early 1990s to 2011 in, mainly, Eastern African journals. The Library of Congress Office, Nairobi indexed over 700 journals from 29 eastern and southern African countries. In 1997 the LC Nairobi Office began adding publications from Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, and Senegal and citations from these countries are included.

The African Studies Centre. Library (Leiden, The Netherlands) has an excellent OPAC (online public access catalog), African Studies Centre Catalogue. The Catalogue includes annotated citations to articles, chapters from edited works acquired since 1988 and published in African Studies Abstracts.

ERIC. For articles and books on education. Try ERIC via CSA Illumina. British Education Index has many articles as well.

Google Books: Search the full text of books. Shows only selected pages unless the book is in the public domain. When you find partial book contents, it's a good idea to look at the actual book as there may be additional useful content.

Has an experimental magazine section. In the Advanced search, limit by Magazines. Find articles, including photos, from Jet, Black World, Ebony.

Google Scholar: for academic journal articles, chapters in books, books. Find citations (and sometimes full text).

Google News Archive Search : find citations to newspaper and magazine articles. Some full text articles are on line such as from Time magazine. You can read the other articles by using the library's newspaper and journal holdings.

ELDIS: To retrieve full text articles on many Africa-related topics, search the ELDIS database from the British Library for Development Studies at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK. Has Country Profiles.

Web of Knowledge: Some full text articles, abstracts. Stanford access only. Also on the SUL Database page. (PS348T Try for articles on land, education, health, AIDS)

Google. Limiting Google searches to PDFs often finds academic reports. Put in your search words and add filetype:pdf Example: ghana "primary education" filetype:pdf

Persee. In French. Full text articles online from academic journals. Includes Cahiers d'etudes africaines, Annales de geographie, Revue francaise de science politique. From Aliacom and l'université Lumière Lyon 2 with the French Ministère de l'éducation nationale, de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche.

CAIRN. In French. Full text journal articles from Afrique contemporaine, has abstracts and some articles from Afrique & Histoire. Table of contents of Le Monde diplomatique.

FRANCIS. Citations to articles in English or French. A few full text articles.

Liberation Journals Index
"index covering the interwar Pan-African periodicals La Revue du Monde Noir, Légitime Défense, L’Étudiant Noir, the wartime Tropiques, and the postwar Présence Africaine, as well as the Québécois journal Liberté......" Descriptions of each journal, with references. Search by author, theme, genre (biography, interview, folklore, play, poetry, review, etc.).

Medical Topics
African Index Medicus (full text articles), PubMed (citations and some full text articles), PsycInfo, Global health on CAB direct (put AND between keywords). Africa Health & Medicine on the Internet is a directory of internet resources. Also search a selection of databases with one search, African Studies - Database Searching using xSearch. [A variant of xSearch; mainly uses science databases.]

China Academic Journals. In Chinese. "Full-text database covering approximately 6,600 journal titles from the People's Republic of China." From EastView Online.

British Periodicals. Full text articles mainly 20th century. Small number of items retrieved.

C19: The Nineteenth Century Index. Licensed to Stanford users. Includes citations to magazine articles published in the 19th century up to the early 20th century in British periodicals. Includes some article citations for The Times newspaper. Select Search Indexes and limit by Periodicals. Stanford also has a separate full text database to The Times, 1785-1985. Some full text.
