Pretoria: Statistics South Africa, 2006. Report no. 03-09-05 (2006). Death rates for adults rose sharply from 1997 to 2004. "death rates for females age 20-39 more than tripled and for males age 30-44 more than doubled.  By 2004, for those age 20-44, female death rates were higher than those for males." "Death rates from diabetes and obesity rose for each sex – 35% for males and 18% for females." "The homicide rate in South Africa is very high, probably second only to that in Colombia."

Southern African Regional Poverty Network
Established by the Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria. Its purpose is "To provide a facility for raising the level and quality of public debate on poverty across the Southern African Development Community - SADC." Has a Statistics Section. The UNHCR Statistical Yearbook has country datasheets with statistics on refugees (country of origin, of asylum, location of refugee camps, etc.) The annual Global Refugee Trends has similar information. Statistics can be downloaded to Excel. Has posters.

The 2000 Census. Use the Search, use search terms Ancestry Foreign Born Africa 2000. Find population statistics by state. For example, Maryland has 62,688 people born in Africa which comprises 12.1% of the foreign born in the state. The District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) has 9,208 people born in Africa. The Foreign-Born Population: 2000 (in Adobe pdf) has some national statistics.[KF]

2000 Census. American FactFinder has a table, PCT19. PLACE OF BIRTH FOR THE FOREIGN-BORN POPULATION [126] which list figures by African region and by selected African countries (Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone). [KF]
