Homosexuality: a Research Guide (Green Library Information Center Z7164.S42D96 1987) lists and describes a wealth of resources from "the full spectrum of points of view." Includes a subject and personal name index.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Encyclopedias and dictionaries can provide useful descriptions, overviews, and lists of recommended reading on a topic.

Completely Queer: The Gay and Lesbian Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center & HASRC HQ75.H63 1998) focuses on "the multifaceted international subculture self-identified lesbians and gay men have cultivated and refined in the second half of the 20th century."

Encyclopedia of Homosexuality (Green Library Information Center & Stacks HQ76.25.E53 1990) surveys the field of homosexuality, including conflicting theoretical perspectives where these exist.

Gays and Lesbians in Mainstream Cinema: Plots, Critiques, Casts and Credits for 272 Theatrical and Made-for-Television Hollywood Releases (Green Library Information Center PN1995.9.H55P37 1993) also includes an introduction to the subject and "A Brief History of Regulatory Codes in the American Film Industry." Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center HQ9.H846 1994) scholarly articles of varying lengths cover a wide range of topics connected to human sexuality. Includes bibliographies.

Sexuality and the Law: An Encyclopedia of Major Legal Cases (Green Library Information Center KF9325.A7L46 1993) "describes more than one hundred significant court decisions concerning sexuality." Many deal with gay/lesbian/bisexual issues.

Homosexuality and Religion: An Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center BL65 .H64 H63 2007)

Literature

"Gay and Lesbian Literature" in vol. 76, pp. 416-439 of Contemporary Literary Criticism (Green Library Stacks PN771.C58) gives an overview of the subject as well as a collection of writing on the subject by a wide variety of authors.

The Gay and Lesbian Literary Heritage: A Reader's Companion to the Writers and Their Works, from Antiquity to the Present (Green Library HASRC PN56 .H57 G365 2002) "provides overviews of the gay and lesbian presence in a variety of literatures and historical periods, in-depth essays on major gay and lesbian writers in world literature...."

Gay and Lesbian Literature, vol. 1 & 2 (Green Library Information Center PN56.H57.G36 1994) provides biographical information, lists of their works, lists of critical sources, and a signed critical essay on each author.

Who's Who in Lesbian and Gay Writing (Green Library Information Center HQ75.13 .G75 2002)

The Gay and Lesbian Literary Heritage: A Reader's Companion to the Writers and Their Works, From Antiquity to the Present (Green Library HASRC PN56 .H57 G365 2002)

Contemporary Lesbian Writers of the United States: A Bio- Bibliographical Critical Sourcebook (Green Library Information Center & HASRC PS153.L46C65 1993) entries describe the lives and works of authors, with bibliographies. The introduction provides an important overview, while appendices list publishers and periodicals, and a bibliography covers lesbian issues.

Contemporary Gay American Novelists: A Bio-Bibliographical Critical Sourcebook (Green Library Information & HASRC PS374.N63C66 1993) offers "biographical, bibliographical, and critical information on over fifty representative contemporary gay American novelists." The introduction provides an overview, while an appendix lists small presses and selected journals.

Latin American Writers on Gay and Lesbian Themes: A Bio-Critical Sourcebook (Green Library Information Center & HASRC PQ7081.3.F62 1994) entries describe the lives and works of authors, with lists of works and criticism. The introduction provides an overview.

Spanish Writers on Gay and Lesbian Themes : A Bio-critical Sourcebook/ (HASRC-Lane Room  PQ6046 .S49 S66 1999) same focus as the one on Latin America but this one is  for Spain

GLBT Life with Full Text Stanford only "Full text content available in GLBT Life with Full Text includes The Advocate, Gay Parent Magazine, Girlfriends, GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian & Gay Studies, James White Review, ISNA News, Ladder, Lesbian Tide, New York Blade, ONE, TANGENTS, Washington Blade, and many more."

Lesbian Periodicals Index (Green Library Information Center HQ75.6.U5P68 1986) "an author subject guide to forty-two lesbian periodicals" many of which have ceased publication and "are now a part of the collective lesbian past."

Index to the Ladder, Volumes I-XVI, 1956-1972 (Green Library Stacks HQ75.L32 Index) part of the Arno reprint of the entire run of Ladder, a monthly periodical published in San Francisco by Daughters of Bilitis. Indexes are not cumulated.

An Index to The Advocate, The National Gay Newsmagazine, 1967- 1982 (Green Library Information Center HQ75.A38 suppl.) provides "access to all feature articles, news items, personal interviews, columns, reviews and portfolios published" from 1967 to 1982.

Alternative Press Index (1991+ available on the Web ; 1969-71; 1974+ shelved at Green Library Information Center Z7164.S66A5) indexes periodicals devoted to social change, including some gay/lesbian periodicals.

Alt-PressWatch provides fulltext of "a collection of newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press."

America: History and Life (1964+ on Web) covers U.S. and Canadian history.

Contemporary Women's Issues (1992+, full-text via the Web) reports, articles, and newsletters on issues affecting women.

Black Studies on Disc SUNet ID required. (1988+ ) contains the Catalog of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and 1988+ of the Index to Black Periodicals (see information on print holdings below.) Contains information on materials by and about African Americans, Africa and peoples of African ancestry.

Expanded Academic ASAP general index to over 1500 magazines with some fulltext. (1980+)

Family & Society Studies Worldwide (1970+) - part of BiblioLine. indexes and abstracts over a thousand journals, books, conference papers, government reports, etc., and includes all the records once published in the comprehensive Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature.

GenderWatch (1982+, full-text on Web) articles, newsletters, reports focused on women's issues.

Historical Abstracts (1954+ on Web) covers world history except U.S. & Canada.

PsycArticles Fulltext Search fulltext of articles in journals published by the American Psychological Association.

Sociological Abstracts (1963+) (1952-1973 shelved at Green Library Information Center HM1.S67) Indexes articles concerned spectrum of social behavior (individuals, small groups, large organizations, communities, institutions, and societies). Covers sociology and related disciplines such as anthropology, criminology, law, social psychology, urban studies, race relations, demography, and education.
