PROCESSUS MARTINI P.[apae] IV [aliis II] contra Petru[m]
Arragonae et Palaeologum
, ca. 1281

For identification of texts in manuscripts, collections of incipits, or initia, are vital. A general guide is Pelzer (1964), "Répertoire d'incipit pour la littérature latine...," in Études d'histoire littéraire sur la scholastique médiévale, pp.35-64 (Z7128.S3P4 STK). Also see Boyle, (1984) Medieval Latin Palaeography: A Bibliographical Guide, pp. 295-98, (Z106.B68); and D'Alverny (1986) "Editions de textes," in L'Homme et son univers au moyen âge, pp. 128-29 (B721.C55 STK) for lists of incipits. Many manuscript catalogs include incipits.

Stanford has In principio: Incipit index of Latin Texts, the CD-ROM version (description of database) of the card file of L'Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes (IRHT), Paris, and the Hill Monastic Library. The two microform collections earlier produced from the IRHT fiche: Répertoire des fins de textes latins classiques et médiévaux (95,000 explicits), and Répertoire d'incipit de sermons latins: antiquité tardive et moyen âge (70,000 incipits) are located at UC Berkeley but not at Stanford. Stanford does have IRHT's Répertoire bio-bibliographique des auteurs latins, patristiques et médiévaux, MTXT Room MFICHE 1102. For sermons there are also large collections of incipits in published works, see Boyle, (1984) Medieval Latin Palaeography: A Bibliographical Guide (Z106.B68).
