Medieval Palaeography: an Introduction (D.A. Postles)
R. Wood's Medieval Latin Paleography

For an introductory essay and bibliography see "Latin Paleography" in Medieval studies: an introduction and Bischoff (1990) Latin Palaeography: Antiquity & Middle Ages. For Classical Latin there is the older article by Thompson in Sandys (1963) Companion to Latin studies, 3rd. ed. For bibliographies see Boyle (1984) Medieval Latin palaeography: a bibliographical introduction; Bischoff, "Palaeographie" in Dahlman-Waitz, 10th ed., I.14; Ahlfeld, "Handschriftenkunde" in Dahlman-Waitz, Quellenkunde de deutschen Geschichte, I.15, and Caenegem's chapter on palaeography (p.463-78) in Introduction aux sources de l'histoire medievale. Mantello and Rigg (1996) Medieval Latin: an introduction and bibliographical guide is the standard, indispensable handbook for Medieval Latin.

A brief history of writing is found in Gaur (1992) History of writing, rev. ed. There are articles in many of the general encyclopedias listed in Encyclopedias and Dictionaries under such headings as "Latin palaeography, writing, scriptoria," etc.

There are examples and descriptions of the major bookhands and notorial scripts in "Latin Paleography" in Powell (1992) Medieval Studies: An Introduction, 2nd ed., and in Brown (1990) A Guide to Western Historical Scripts from Antiquity to 1660.

Also, for examples of bookhands there are catalogs by country that continue and supplement Lowe (1934-72) Codices Latini Antiquiores; a palaeographical guide to Latin Manuscripts prior to the Ninth Century, 12 v.; Codices latini antiquiores; a palaeographical guide to Latin manuscripts prior to the ninth century. Part II: Great Britain and Ireland. Edited by E. A. Lowe. 2nd ed. Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1972. See Boyle (1984) Medieval Latin Palaeography: A Bibliographical Guide for a list of titles in this series. The following sets are shelved in the Medieval Studies Rm:

  • Z6605.L3 C38. Catalogo dei manoscritti in scrittura latina datati o databili
  • Z6605.L3 K35 F. Katalog der datierten Handschriften in der Schweiz
  • Z6605.L3 K37 F. Katalog der datierten Handschriften... vor 1600 in Schweden
  • Z6605.L3 S18. Samaran, Charles. Catalogue des manuscrits en écriture latine portant des indications de date, de lieu ou de copiste
  • Z6620.A9 A37 F. Katalog der datierten Handschriften in lateinischer Schriftin Oesterreich
  • Z6620.G3 D37 1984. Datierte Handschriften in Bibliotheken der Bundesrepublik
  • Z6620.G7 R6 1988. Catalogue of dated and datable manuscripts c. 737-1600 in Cambridge
  • Z6620.G7 W37 1984. Catalogue of dated and datable manuscripts c. 435-1600 in Oxford
  • Z6620.N5 L5. Manuscrits datés conservâes dans les Pays-Bas
  • Z6621.B837. Catalogue of dated and datable manuscripts, c. 700-1600... British Library

For abbreviations the most frequently used handbook is Cappelli, Dizionario di abbreviature Latine ed Italiane ..., Z111.C24 1990, Lane Rm. A. Pelzer's supplement to the earlier editions of Capelli, Abreviations latines médiévales, 2nd ed., Z111.C242, may still prove useful. For Latin abbreviations in English manuscripts and records: C.T. Martin's The record interpreter . . .  is useful. It also includes a glossary of Latin words, place & personal names. Abbreviationes , a computerized abbreviation dictionary (N.B. choose the "Web Servers" tab to access program; choose "detail view" in the "Use" pull-down menu.)

Basic language dictionaries are in the Information Center and Lane Room (Latin Dictionaries). Dictionaries and other linguistic aides are described in the following works: Palmer's English translation of Strecker, Introduction to Medieval Latin; Crosby (1982) Medieval Studies: A Bibliographic Guide; Mantello and Rigg (1996) Medieval Latin: an introduction and bibliographical guide; Caenegem (1997) Introduction aux sources de l'histoire medievale.. Additionally, The Medieval Literature of Western Europe (1966, PN671.F5 Lane Rm) has excellent review articles on Medieval Latin and also Old English, Middle English, Medieval French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Old Norse and Celtic.

5. Diplomatics

Diplomatics is the study of charters and acts and other archival records. See Caenegem (p.330 ff.) and Leonard Boyle's article "Diplomatics" in the second ed. of Powell (1992) Medieval studies: an introduction. Many of the aids for the study of diplomatics--chronologies, prosopographical & biographical lists, archival guides, topographical reference works and abbreviations--are listed in their respective sections of this inventory, but they are covered systematically by Caenegem and by Boyle (and also by Heinemeyer's bibliography for "Diplomatik und Aktenkunde" in Dahlmann-Waitz, 10th ed., v.1 pt.18, Z2236.D14); also consult Guyotjeannin (1993) Diplomatique médievale, CD47.G9 1993, Lane Rm.
