Celebration a success!
Monday afternoon a distinguished group of medievalists and the
library employees who support Green's medieval room met to celebrate
the opening of the room. Stanford Professors in attendance included
Seth Lehrer, Hester Gelber, Philippe Buc, and George Brown. Both
John Rawlings and John Mustain came, ably representing the library
staff who have been such a help setting up the Reading Room, not
all of whom were able to attend.
Professor Niklaus Largier, head of Berkeley's Medieval Studies
Program braved the usual heavy traffic in honor of the occasion.
We are hoping there will be more joint activities involving Berkeley
and Stanford in future.
Best of all a number of students, graduate and undergraduate were
in attendance. Eva St. Clair demonstrated some of the tools available
to students of the middle ages in Green 351D. She showed people
how to search the 70000 medieval abbreviations listed in Olaf Pluta's
Abbreviationes and how to construction custom dictionary. She also
arranged to play medieval music and to view the many high resolution
digital images of medieval manuscript useful in the study of medieval
scripts -- many of them courtesy of Berkeley's Digital Scriptorium.
Not demonstrated were the programs for producing camera-ready copy
of critical editions. But they're there, together with such tried
and true resources Migne's Patrologiae cursus completus,
series latina, editions of the works of Albert, Aquinas,
Bonaventure, Ockham, Scotus and particularly the great collections
of facsimiles like the French Manuscrits datés.
Real books in a pleasant room are a resource we can't improve on.
But they are even more valuable when accompanied by more modern
tools. Oddly, the oldest data base in the humanities belongs in
our subject area Roberto Busa's Thomae Aquinatis Opera omnia cum
hypertextibus. Thanks to the assistance of Glen Worthey and Ronnie
Fields, you can even find assistance using Busa in 351D -- a daunting
task.
So if you didn't find time to celebrate with us on Monday afternoon,
be sure to come by another time. The room and its resources are
there to serve you all the time.
Best wishes for a productive year, Rega Wood & Hester Gelber
