Language, Literature, Folklore, Sound Recordings

language

For introductory articles see the Britannica Online for "North American" and "Meso- American Indian Languages"; color maps are included. Also see Teeter (1972) "American Indian Linguistics" in Annual Review of Anthropology 1:411-424 and the more recent review articles in that journal (fulltext at JSTOR and for current years High Wire Press). For additional background information see Sebeok, ed. (1977) Native Languages of the Americas, 2 vols., Green Stack (vol. 2 includes a 200 page checklist "North American Indian Languages"). Joseph Greenberg (1988)Language in the Americas, Green Stack, puts forward a new and controversial classification scheme. See Bibliography of The Amerind Linguistic Debate.

Bibliographies and handbooks:
for North American languages including Eskimo languages and Mexico see "Native Languages of North America," pt.3, vol. 10 of Current Trends in Linquistics, 405.C967 Stack [also includes checklist and maps]. Also see Boas (1911-1938) Handbook of American Indian Languages, 3 vols., PM801.B7. This handbook will eventually be updated by vol. 17 of the Handbook of North American Indians, which is in progress. A good classified bibliography (not covering Eskimo) is Marken (1978) The American Indian Language & Literature, Z1029.1 N67.M3. For California native languages: William Bright (1982) Bibliography of the Languages of Native California..., Z7118.B74; Robert Heizer (1966) Languages, Territories and Names of California Indians, Z7118.B78. Also, Native Peoples & Languages of Alaska [map] (1982). The major journal for Amerindian studies is IJAL (International Journal of American Linguistics), Green Stack/Current Periodicals. The best single source for information on grammars, dictionaries and language learning material is Languages of North, Central & South America (1976) Z7001.045 v.8. There is a review of recent Alaskan, Northern Canadian and Greenlandic native language dictionaries and grammars in Reference Service Review 16 (1988): 123-134. Supplement these with Edward Evans (1977) Bibliography of Language Arts Materials for Native Americans...1965-1974, plus 1979 supplement, Z1209.2N6E83 Green Stack; and Evans (1980) North American Indian Language Materials 1890-1965, An Annotated Bibliography of Monographic Works, PM206.E92 Green Stack. The latter fills the gap between the nine linguistic bibliographies by James Pilling that appeared in the BAE Bulletins, and the previously listed Evans bibliography. Also in the Reference Collection is Pilling's Proof-Sheets of a Bibliography of the Languages of the North American Indians (1885) Z7118.P64. For language teaching, the most up-to-date survey of the field and its literature is Martin (1976) A Survey of the Current Study and Teaching of North American Indian Languages in the United State and Canada, PM205.M37. There is language material in several microform collections: see Appendix A.
