Selected Database Searching Statistics for October 1997

For your statistical information, here's the number of online sessions run in the major science databases at Stanford last month. For comparison, I've also included the number of online sessions run in Socrates (Stanford's online catalog), our most heavily used file on campus.

Database Online Sessions
BIOSIS 1949
CAS ONLINE 239*
CROSSFIRE (BEILSTEIN & GMELIN) 1457**
EI/COMPENDEX 1151
INSPEC 3503
MEDLINE 1677
SCISEARCH 7195
SOCRATES 49959

* Excludes use of CAS on Swain workstations #11 and #12.

** Based on use from two accounts (old one for first week in Oct and new one for last 3 weeks in Oct).

Crossfire Use Statistics for October 1997: The Top 10 Academic Institutions in the U.S.

Due to Chem 130/132 students, we use Crossfire more than any other institution in the country during October.

Biographical Information on the Web

A list of obituaries and biographical notes published in:

  • Angewandte Chemie (1888-1995)
  • Chemische Berichte (1918-1995)
  • Helvetica Chimica Acta (1918-1992)
  • Liebigs Annalen (1975-1995)

are available on the web at: http://www.vchgroup.de/vch/journals/2005/biog_notes1.html

Reference Titles Published on CD-ROM Now Available on “Kiosk” Workstations in the Science and Engineering Libraries

In addition to searching Socrates and Internet resources, “Kiosk” workstations in the Science and Engineernig (SERG) Libraries now provide access to nine titles published on CD-ROM. Previously, these titles were available only in one SERG Library. The CD-ROMs are in the graphical interface supplied by the producer. Window NT and CD-Net software are being used to manage access. Titles available include:

  • Chapman & Hall Chemical Dictionaries
  • Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds
  • Natural Products
  • Organic Compounds
  • Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Publications
  • McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology
  • Merck Index
  • NTIS (National Technical Information Service) Index
  • Phase Equilibria Diagrams for Ceramists
  • Polymeric Materials Encyclopedia

More details on each title and search tips are available at: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/sergkiosk/kioskcd.html

More Access to the World's Largest Chemical Handbooks

An unlimited number of current Stanford students, faculty, and staff can now use the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry and the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry Via Crossfire.

Abstracts for papers published from 1980-present in Beilstein are now available too. Select the database BS97xxAB to search the abstract text.

See http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/collections/databases/crossfire/index.html for links to tutorials, FTP instrucutions of search software, and new setup instructions for accessing Crossfire via our new host, the University of Wisconsin.

Workshops are held regularly to help users amke efficient use of Crossfire. The workshop schedule is available at this URL: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/caswrksh.html
