Aparna Sharma has accepted the position of Operations Manager for the Swain Library, effective May 1, 2006. Before coming to Stanford, Aparna worked six years as an Education Coordinator at the Tompkins McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. From 1999–2000, she handled Interlibrary Loan requests at VCU’s James Branch Cabell Library. Before coming to VCU, she worked two years assisting in providing reference and information services, performing database searches, and managing all government documents for the US Depository in the Medical Library at West Virginia University at Morgantown. She has also worked in a bank as well as in a business environment. In the eleven years she has been in the US, she has had a wide international exposure dealing with people of different cultures, languages, and backgrounds.

Aparna’s experiences in helping users, coordinating and providing user instruction, providing reference help, doing database searches, developing handouts, maintaining web pages, handling interlibrary loan requests, supervising students and staff, maintaining statistics, and managing budgets will enable her to quickly come up to speed at Swain. We’re very glad she is here! Please join me in welcoming Aparna Sharma (asharma4@stanford.edu) to Swain and Stanford.

Using a web browser and a plug-in from Citrix (ICA Client), beta access is now set up for using SciFinder Scholar, Crossfire, Cambridge Structural Database, and the NIST Structure Database from off-campus (works for on-campus use too).

This means that you don’t have to load any of these database search clients on your computer and that Macintosh, Unix, and Linux users can use these programs via a web browser.

Go to: http://cdserver.stanford.edu/ and logon Explicitly using your SUNet user name and password. Note that you must download and install the Citrix client first. Clients for many operating systems exist. See: Citrix Downloads.

While I have done some testing in Windows operating system, I have no experience using it in Mac, Unix, or Linux environments. If you have an operating system in one of these environments, please let me know if cdserver access works for you. Please let me know if you run into any problems too.

Users of the Minerva Crossfire server should expect a roughly 10 minute outage sometime between the hours of Midnight and 8 AM on Sunday, May 28th. The university is upgrading network devices during this window.

Stanford has test access to Web Citation Index beta until October 24, 2006. During this time, you’ll have full access to bibliographic and cited reference data from preprints, open access journals, technical reports, dissertations, proceedings, and other gray literature. And you’ll be able to take advantage of powerful features such as cited reference searching.

Derwent Innovations Index (DII) is a research tool that provides easy Web access to more than 11 million patents with links to cited and citing patents, relevant literature, and full-text patent data sources.

It is now possible for Stanford users to search DII by structure or substructure. Note that you must download a Chime plug-in before you are able to search by structure (see New User > Requirements in DII). Visit the DII website.

Online access to this journal is currently unavailable and may be so for several weeks. I’ll let you know when access is restored. In addition, print issues for 2006 are also unavailable. Online access should be restored in several weeks. Hopefully, print issues will be arriving shortly thereafter. In the meantime, if you need an article from this journal, please submit a document delivery request.

We have trial access until May 31st. Please let me know if you think that Stanford should subscribe to this title. An institutional subscription costs about $1,100 a year (the copyright fee to get a single article via document delivery is $100).
