Checklist for New Users
Library Borrowing Card for Students, Faculty and Staff
Stanford ID card is your library borrowing card.
Cooperative agreements between Stanford and UC-B enable you to borrow materials via
email See:

Library Borrowing Card and CAS Access for Visiting Scholars
Go to Green Library Privileges Desk to get a library borrowing card. You will need:
- Your Visiting Scholar Card
- Your complete email address
- Your mailing address
- Your Department and Phone Number
- (Mail codes: Chemistry = 5080, Chemical Eng = 5025)
If you intend to take Chemical Abstracts training to search online, also ask the Green
Privileges Desk staff to give you a:
- Free Folio Account
- Lexis-Nexis Exception ID Number
Confidentiality of Circulation Records Form
Default for campus is OK to disclose your name to another patron if they need to briefly
consult an item you have checked out. To block disclosure, you need to fill out a
Confidentiality Form. Request form at Swain circulation desk.
Mailing and Email Addresses
It is important for you to keep your mailing and email addresses current in order to
receive notices from the library. Even though you use email, your email address may not
be in the Library's circulation system. The Library gets it's data from the Registrar
for students and from the Controllers Office for Faculty and Staff.

24 Hour Access to the Swain Library
All graduate students, faculty, postdocs, and visiting scholars in Chemistry and Chemical
Engineering are eligible for key access to the Swain Library.
You must attend a 30 minute “key tour” to learn how to check out books when the
library is closed, where lights are located, etc. Bring your ID card to the tour. A refundable
$3 key deposit is required. Tours are held Wednesdays from 3-3:30pm.
Database Searching Workshops
The Swain Library holds workshops once about every three weeks on using Chemical Abstracts
Online, CASREACT, and Beilstein/Gmelin via Crossfire. See:

Socrates II Improvements
The latest version of Socrates II (Stanford's Web-based
catalog) includes the following improvements:
- Full Record has become Keyword. This index searches most of the record
except the call number. Note: The old Keyword has been eliminated.
- You may choose to sort results up to a limit of 500. Note: The default
is None (no sorting).
- Conferences have been included in the Author (au) index.
CASREACT Now Available Through Folio
CASREACT is now available through the same account as CAS Online. Please type
SEL CAS ONLINE in Folio and then after you are logged on to CAS, choose
FIL CASREACT. CASREACT is available evenings and weekends to current
Stanford students, faculty, and academic staff.
Please do not search CASREACT until you've received training. The workshop schedule
for the current quarter is located at this URL:

Help for searching CASREACT by CAS Registry Number and by Functional Group
Name/Class is available at:

Note that limited CASREACT searching is also possible in SciFinder Scholar, a user
friendly software package for searching Chemical Abstracts Online and CASREACT. To search
CASREACT via SciFinder Scholar (SFS), draw a structure and then press the Search Reactions
button. SFS is available evenings and weekends to current Stanford students, faculty, and
all staff. No training is required to use SFS. Please consult this URL for more information:
