Checklist for New Users

Library Borrowing Card for Students, Faculty and Staff

Stanford ID card is your library borrowing card.

Cooperative agreements between Stanford and UC-B enable you to borrow materials via email See: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/ils/coop.html

Library Borrowing Card and CAS Access for Visiting Scholars

Go to Green Library Privileges Desk to get a library borrowing card. You will need:

  • Your Visiting Scholar Card
  • Your complete email address
  • Your mailing address
  • Your Department and Phone Number
  • (Mail codes: Chemistry = 5080, Chemical Eng = 5025)

If you intend to take Chemical Abstracts training to search online, also ask the Green Privileges Desk staff to give you a:

  • Free Folio Account
  • Lexis-Nexis Exception ID Number
Confidentiality of Circulation Records Form

Default for campus is OK to disclose your name to another patron if they need to briefly consult an item you have checked out. To block disclosure, you need to fill out a Confidentiality Form. Request form at Swain circulation desk.

Mailing and Email Addresses

It is important for you to keep your mailing and email addresses current in order to receive notices from the library. Even though you use email, your email address may not be in the Library's circulation system. The Library gets it's data from the Registrar for students and from the Controllers Office for Faculty and Staff.

Students: Check your Axess record to see that your email is listed along with current mailing address
Faculty/Staff: Check Whois to see if your information is current. Use Prism to update your record.
Visiting Scholars: Send email and mailing address information to priv@sulmail.
24 Hour Access to the Swain Library

All graduate students, faculty, postdocs, and visiting scholars in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are eligible for key access to the Swain Library.

You must attend a 30 minute “key tour” to learn how to check out books when the library is closed, where lights are located, etc. Bring your ID card to the tour. A refundable $3 key deposit is required. Tours are held Wednesdays from 3-3:30pm.

Database Searching Workshops

The Swain Library holds workshops once about every three weeks on using Chemical Abstracts Online, CASREACT, and Beilstein/Gmelin via Crossfire. See: http://garamond.stanford.edu:9001/dp/owa/wn.draw_new#training

Socrates II Improvements

The latest version of Socrates II (Stanford's Web-based catalog) includes the following improvements:

  • Full Record has become Keyword. This index searches most of the record except the call number. Note: The old Keyword has been eliminated.
  • You may choose to sort results up to a limit of 500. Note: The default is None (no sorting).
  • Conferences have been included in the Author (au) index.

CASREACT Now Available Through Folio

CASREACT is now available through the same account as CAS Online. Please type SEL CAS ONLINE in Folio and then after you are logged on to CAS, choose FIL CASREACT. CASREACT is available evenings and weekends to current Stanford students, faculty, and academic staff.

Please do not search CASREACT until you've received training. The workshop schedule for the current quarter is located at this URL: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/caswrksh.html

Help for searching CASREACT by CAS Registry Number and by Functional Group Name/Class is available at: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/collections/databases/cas/casreact/index.html

Note that limited CASREACT searching is also possible in SciFinder Scholar, a user friendly software package for searching Chemical Abstracts Online and CASREACT. To search CASREACT via SciFinder Scholar (SFS), draw a structure and then press the Search Reactions button. SFS is available evenings and weekends to current Stanford students, faculty, and all staff. No training is required to use SFS.
