ACS Directory of Graduate Research via the Web
The ACS Directory of Graduate Research is now available via the web for
Stanford students, faculty and staff. Go to
http://www.pubs.acs.org/dgrweb/

Chemical & Engineering News Online Pilot Project
I am very pleased to announce that Stanford is part of a pilot project to
test out the impact and use of C&EN Online. To access C&EN Online, go
to:
http://pubs.acs.org/cen
When you click on a link to view the full text of an article:
- If you are an ACS member, you will be prompted to input your ACS
member number (first 8 digits on top left side of your mailing label
for print C&EN).
- If you are not an ACS member, you will be required to fill out a
one-time registration form before being able to read full-text
articles.
Sometime during the pilot, there will be an online survey. I would be
grateful if you would take the time to fill out the survey when it becomes
available as your feedback will be considered carefully in exploring future
options for access to C&EN Online.
* Please note that the pilot includes access to the ACS JobBank that lists
open positions.
Remote Access to ACS E-Journals is Now Available
The Libraries are in the final test stages of implementing a new type of
proxy authentication for off-campus users. This change makes it possible to
use the ACS journals from home.
Using Angewandte Chemie Online - Please Logout
Currently, one simultaneous user at a time can access Angewandte Chemie
Online
(http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/jtoc?ID=26737).
If a user doesn't logout (see button at top right part of screen) when
they are done, the session will remain active for another 10 minutes at
which time the session will time out. To maximize access to this heavily used
title, please be sure to logout out when you are done.
Because one simultaneous user is insufficient, negotiations are underway
to expand access. Stay tuned...
In this same vein, when using Swain's workstations we would greatly
appreciate it if you would close sessions to databases and e-journals when
you are finished using them.
Alerts for BIOSIS Now Available
Stanford has web access to BIOSIS (Biological Abstracts Online) from the
Los Alamos National Laboratory. The url to access it is:
http://biosis.lanl.gov/stanford/
To help keep you up to date on research topics or authors of interest, you
are able to set up an “Alert.” BIOSIS® at LANL Alerting
Service is an automatic current awareness service. Users may register for
the service and then create a search strategy which will be matched
automatically against each new update. Users will have the option of
receiving the results of the alert via email or simply receiving an email
notification and then viewing the results by logging into an individual
account.
Alerts are also available in the SciSearch via LANL database. Go to:
http://scisearch2.lanl.gov/stanford/sci.html.
Alerts in Chemical Abstracts Online are also available but must be set up by
the Swain Librarian. For details see:
http://library.stanford.edu/depts/swain/collections/databases/cas/casonline/cascurr.html
Full Text of Molecular Biology of the Cell Linked in PubMed
In collaboration with book publishers, NCBI is adapting books for the web
and linking them to PubMed. The first book, Molecular Biology of the Cell by
Alberts et al., is now available.
PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's search service that provides
access to over 11 million citations in MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, and other related
databases, with links to participating online journals.
PubMed is available at:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=Stanford
EcoPharm Database Now Available Through Crossfire
To address information needs in the areas of pharmacology, toxicology, and
ecological chemistry, Beilstein has launched Crossfire EcoPharm. This
database is available to Stanford students, faculty, and staff through the
Crossfire Interface (choose BSXXXXAE as the database name).
- Pharmacological and toxicological data focus on human and mammalian
toxicology, drug treatment, pharmaceutical and biochemical
chemistry.
- Ecological data are concerned with the effects of chemicals on
various ecosystems, their environmental fate and potential for
accumulation as well as health threat in the environment.
For more details about EcoPharm, please see:
http://www.beilstein.com/products/xf_eco.shtml
Site License Renewed for CaChe & DGauss Software
The Swain Library has renewed its site
license to CaChe Workstation and DGauss software. The timer on the
copy we got last year is set to expire on 10/31/00. So, please come
to Swain Reserve to check out the new version/installation keys. Efforts
are underway to load CaChe and DGauss onto a server so you can FTP it down
from your desktop.
CaChe lets users visualize molecules
in 3D, search for conformations, analyze chemical reactivity and predict
properties of compounds before making them in the lab.
DGauss is a high-accuracy, high-performance
computational chemistry package that uses density functional theory to
predict molecular structures, properties and energetics.
For more information, see:
http://www.cachesoftware.com/
Brochures are also available in the Swain Library.
EngNetBase and CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics via the Web
CRC Press is one of the world's leading
publishers of engineering handbooks. Thirty-one engineering handbooks
are now available online in EngNetBase. To access EngNetBase go to:
http://www.engnetbase.com/cgi-bin/frames.cgi
The CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics is also
available as a web site license to Stanford users. To access the CRC, go
to:
http://www.knovel.com/knovel/Databook/default.htm?WCI=BrowseBook&WCE=34&WCU=1
Recruitment Visits - Resources to Help You Shine
While I am not an expert in career development, I wanted to let you know
about a few resources that can help you get ready for a visit with a
recruiter.
Databases You Should Check Out:
- SciSearch contains an organization Index that you can use to
see what research is being done at an institution. To use SCI, go to:
http://scisearch2.lanl.gov/stanford/sci.html
- Derwent Innovations Index is an international patent database.
Because companies want to own the intellectual property rights for
their research, they publish in patents rather than in journals.
About 70% of the research reported in patent literature is not
duplicated in the journal literature. Patents are of prime importance
at pharmaceutical companies. To use DII, go to:
http://dii.derwent.com/
Regardless of your subject area of expertise, there is a wealth of
information on the AiChE and ACS web sites. I recommend checking out both
sites. Here's a few key links and resources:
Swain Library Instructional Series Under Consideration
To help users become familiar with important
resources and how to use key databases, I am considering offering an evening
lecture series from 7-8 PM on most Mondays during Fall Quarter. Hands-on
practice sessions would be available the next day, on Tuesday from 5-6
PM.
Please contact me
(graceb@stanford.edu)
if you would not be able to attend any of the Monday evening sessions because
of a time conflict. Also indicate if other times on Monday evening
are possible. More than one hands-on session will be
offered if demand is high and/or if the number of conflicts makes
rescheduling necessary.
A schedule of topics along with times/dates
will be announced in the next week.
