Advantages

• Ask questions that are hard to ask in other ways
• No need to know nomenclature
• Get early access to substances before names are assigned

Disadvantages

• Expensive ($36–$54 per search)
• Structures are not available in the Registry File for some compounds (e.g. compounds that have more than 254 Carbons)
