Web of Knowledge/Web of Science Example Searches
Below are two demonstration searches:
Example #1: Get overview of papers written and snapshot of
publishing and citation activity for an author. Using Web of Science, do an Author Search,
sort results to view Most Cited Papers, and then generate a Citation Report.
Example #2: Identify important journals for a subject area.
Using Journal Citation Reports-Science Section, select a subject category, and view results.
Can sort results different ways and can view detailed information for a specific title. Info
that we learn from this search will then be applied to search on Roger Kornberg.
Example #1
Choose Web of Science (=SciSearch)

Enter Author Name: Example is searching Kornberg R* in Science Citation Index

View results. Default sorting order is Latest Date

Using pull-down menu on right side, change sort to “Times Cited” in order
to see most cited paper listed first.

Note that box on right side contains tools to view, sort, analyze, and export results.
Click on “Citation Report” button to generate graphical view about papers
written and number of times authors have cited an author’s papers.

Here’s the Citation Report for Roger Kornberg.

Brief display of results. Sorted by Journal title.

Detailed information for J Chem Ed (only partial info is shown below).

JCR subject categories that have “multidisciplinary” in them often
include some of the most prestigious journals for a field. Note: Because ISI produces
both the Web of Science and the Journal Citation Reports, they use the same Subject
Categories for both databases — categories that are assigned at the journal
title level instead of journal article level.
Sample search: “Chemistry, Multidisciplinary”

Brief display of titles. Sorted by Total Cites.

Brief display of results. Titles sorted by Impact Factor.

Hyperspacing back to Web of Science search for Roger Kornberg and using information
that we learned from JCR about journals categorized as “multidisciplinary,”
let’s refine results by Subject Categories.

Viewing results confirms that we would have filtered out top ranked journals such as
PNAS, Science, Nature, JACS, and Angewandte Chemie International if we had not
selected multidisciplinary categories such as “Multidisciplinary Sciences”
and “Chemistry, Multidisciplinary.”
