Placing Items on Reserve
General Information
The Swain Library provides reserve services for the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical
Engineering. To see what items are on reserve, consult the
Reserves Catalog.
Swain Library has a notebook at the reserve counter that lists items placed on reserve at
Swain (includes processing status information). Swain also maintains
web pages about library resources
for selected classes. Many Stanford classes now use
CourseWork
to make certain resources available. The Chemistry Department also has a site called
ChemWeb
that contains course-related materials such as problem sets and old exams.
Using Reserve Materials
Present your current Stanford ID to use materials. Most reserve materials
circulate for two hours. Items must be returned directly to
the reserves desk so that they can be reshelved promptly. No holds are accepted.
Renewals must be made in person with the book in-hand so that items are available
for other users, if needed, when the loan period is over. If not needed by another
person, items may be renewed. Reserve items circulate only during Swain's hours of
operation (no overnight loans).
Reserve Fines
Because ready and equal access to reserve materials is critical to the academic
enterprise, stiff fines are assessed for tardy responses to items recalled for
reserves and for reserve items kept beyond their loan period. The fine rate for
overdue reserve items is $1.00 per hour, applied in full at 16
minutes after the time due. After five days, a bill for replacement costs and
fines are assessed. We need and appreciate your prompt action in helping make
reserve items available to your colleagues.
Placing Items on Reserve
Please provide adequate time to process lists. While some items may already be
in the library, others may need to be recalled or purchased. Before each Quarter,
a letter calling for reserve items is sent to faculty along with a list of items
placed previously on reserve. To expedite requests, please amend the old list and
provide complete bibliographic citations for new items before returning the list
to Swain. You may need to obtain copyright clearance for photocopies before we
can place them on reserve for you. Contact Blandine Clausing
(bclaus@stanford.edu),
Swain’s Reserve Specialist, for more information or assistance.
