Process Change 6 Use
technological enhancements to facilitate the
activities of original cataloging and redesign
original cataloging workflow to assign tasks
across a broader range of staff.
Assumptions
- Approximately 15% of approval, firm order,
and standing order monographs will require
original cataloging or mediated copy
cataloging.
- Catalogers workstations with reference
tools available on-line will increase
productivity in original cataloging.
- Redistributing cataloging tasks will reduce
the average cost of original cataloging.

Staff in the Original Cataloging units use
workstations which support Windows-like
functions, including cut-and-paste from authority
files, and networked cataloging reference tools
such as the Library of Congress Catalogers'
Desktop and the Gale SUPERLCCS on CD (LC
classification schedules).
Paraprofessional staff create basic cataloging
records assigning preliminary descriptive access
points. The original catalogers review and revise
access points, create authority records, and
assign subject headings and classification. For
some materials, paraprofessional/hourly staff
hired for language expertise missing from the
department translate bibliographic information
and provide subject synopses of materials
requiring original cataloging.
The Team noted that the output from original
cataloging activity could benefit from becoming
more automated and from directing more component
activities to support staff.
The original catalogers spend a good deal of
time consulting manual cataloging and reference
tools which now are available as networked
products. Contact with cataloging departments at
other universities indicated that having on-line
tools for catalogers is a significant
time-saver.
The catalogers expend much time and effort
compensating for lack of a full range of language
expertise within the department; the Team
observed that at OCLC's TechPro unit, support
staff provide descriptive translations,
transliterations, and subject synopses for
original catalogers to use in their work. The
Team concluded that a easily-defined set of
support activities can more appropriately be done
by variant edition catalogers and other support
staff, ensuring the best of use of original
catalogers' time and expertise.
- Acquire sufficient workstations with
Windows-like functions
- Select and install reference tools on
workstations and on the network
- Identify those languages for which external
support is needed
- Define components of record-creation that
can be done by support staff
