Stanford University Libraries Redesign Report
Transition Risks
As the community debate of the Process
Redesign concludes in February, the
Implementation plan will begin to take shape. As
is apparent from the impact of these process
changes, staff across all divisions will be
interested and involved in planning and
accomplishing the changes. Since implementing
these processes requires negotiation and delivery
of cutting-edge vendor services and specification
and programming of computer support, the
timeframe for full implementation of the entire
plan as it exists here will stretch over at least
two years.
During the transition, staff and managers must
be aware that there are chances of productivity
decline as staff participate and retool and as
processes shift. Staff and managers will be
persevering on the cutting edge and should
acknowledge and be assisted in dealing with the
personal and professional challenges that such an
environment presents.
While loss of productivity can be a short-term
problem, much more critical and insidious is loss
of quality control because of possible confusion
in the interim. The Team recommends that
attention to quality control be at the top of
every task list for the implementation
efforts.
