Schematic Redesign For Monographs
Process Changes 1, 2, and 3 combine to form the essence of the schematic redesign of vendor-assisted monographic processing (63% of materials in scope); Table 1 illustrates the new processes. Separating the receipt of the physical book from the building of records for the local system is a key concept of these redesigned processes: The book and record are matched and checked at the vendor site, after which the processed books are shipped to the shelving location and the records transmitted to the library. Less than full bibliographic records are identified and directed to a bibliographic utility for automated re-searching. Critical for these concepts to succeed is an innovative, proactive approach to quality control at every key point in our processes as well as in the operations of utilities and vendors.
In the redesigned environment, we will direct our business to vendors who can furnish shelf-ready materials and the full set of data that is needed in advance to prepare for receipt of the materials[6]. The plan requires forging new partnerships with vendors willing and able to develop these new services and to stand behind them with superior quality control. A number of vendors currently have services close to matching the needs described in this document; others have indicated keen business interest in this very marketable service.
