Redesign Task Force 2: Rationalize Catalog
Maintenance
Process Change
seven of the Final Report of the Redesign
Team called for decentralizing certain simple
categories of catalog maintenance, much of which
represented duplication of work between service
units and cataloging units.
In the time since the formulation of Process
Change 7, the community discussion has enhanced
understanding of the issues, maintenance
processes have evolved, and the technical service
organization has changed in ways affecting
catalog maintenance services. We are poised at a
point where a fresh look at the whole of
maintenance makes eminent sense.
Suspend your reliance on current technology
and draft a plan where both the values of
expeditious action and long-term integrity are
served.
To this end you are charged to:
A. Construct a model or models for supporting
the needs of service units -- branch libraries as
well as Green, SAL, and Meyer -- for catalog
maintenance
B. Embed in the model(s):
- a division of maintenance tasks to reflect
the forward-looking thinking we have used in
planning for Redesign
- a plan for initial and ongoing training in
record maintenance procedures and issues
- a plan for the long-term stewardship
responsibility inherent in record
maintenance
- a plan for building and supporting a
symbiotic maintenance community, no matter to
which part of SUL/AIR the staff person
reports
C. Consider presenting at least one model
where a service unit is entrusted with
responsibility for a radically wide range of
maintenance.
Deliver at least one innovative plan to The
Team by December 15, 1995. We are less interested
in the particulars of workflow than we are in the
plan to cover training and ongoing support of the
details and values inherent in this function.
Cataloging has set up various special projects
with a number of service units over the past
year; the experiences of these projects can
inform your planning, whether as exemplars or as
hard lessons learned.
