    Who Catalogs What?

All newly purchased monographic materials enter through the Monograph Receiving Unit of the Acquisitions Department. This unit receives and processes materials sent to them by vendors and publishers (firm orders, approvals, blanket orders, memberships, standing orders). In addition, a Library or Library unit that has purchased materials directly and has already paid for them by credit card or other means sends the materials to them for processing.

Our domestic book vendor electronically sends catalog records for books that they supply shelf-ready. Monograph Receiving staff search bibliographic utilities (LC, OCLC, RLIN) for cataloging records for the remainder of the materials that they receive. If a valid cataloging record is found, they import the record and copy catalog most books.

All monographic gifts to be added to the collection enter through the Gifts and Exchange Unit. Receiving and copy cataloging of monographic gifts is done in the Materials Control unit of the Metadata Department.

Most serials and government documents serials are received through the Serials and Government Serials Unit of the Acquisitions Department., then routed through the Metadata Development Unit of the Metadata Department. Monographic materials for which no cataloging record is found or materials that require specialized cataloging are routed to the appropriate cataloging unit. Classification, Materials Control, Metadata and Metadata Development are Metadata Department service units that catalog non-serials materials. (See the Monograph Receiving to Metadata Department Flowchart [PDF] for a breakdown of the monograph workflow within Technical Processing). In addition Special Collections, Music and Branner each catalog certain kinds of materials.
