    Mission

To support the University's mission of teaching, learning and research, the Metadata Department provides tools for finding, selecting, identifying and obtaining material collected by Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources.

    Goals

Creation and maintenance of descriptive metadata is distributed among a number of units in Library Technical Services, some of SULAIR's branch libraries and the Digital Services Group in Academic Information Resources. The SULAIR OPAC, Socrates is the place where most descriptive metadata is stored and made accessible. In a streamlined process, the Acquisitions Department receives all material, and copy-catalogs the majority of it, making use of vendor services wherever possible (see flowcharts). The Metadata Department provides access for those materials that are unique or difficult to catalog. The Department also helps to plan processing of large collections (purchased or gift), which cannot be accommodated within the workflow for new material. Metadata Department also handles the bulk of electronic resources, serials and multimedia materials. Exceptions are maps, music, rare books, and manuscript and archival collections. The Department catalogs materials in all languages except Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Some Special Collections materials (serials, Slavic, and Hebrew) are also cataloged by the Department. In addition to cataloging, the Metadata Department manages an authority database, which contains over 1.7 authority records, and provides maintenance for the bibliographic database, which contains over 5 million records. The Department also provides support for large scale collection moves.

The goals of the Metadata Department are to:

    • Advocate for, provide and maintain intellectual access to SULAIR's collections
    • Process current incoming materials and data immediately - no backlogs
    • Advocate for and assure quality of our products and services
    • Provide planning support to collection development for collections processing.
    • Commit to cooperative cataloging programs such as PCC, whose BIBCO, NACO and SACO standards are followed as a default for all original monographic cataloging
    • Partner with vendors and make use of emerging vendor services
    • Accomplish all of the above by recruiting and developing an elite professional and paraprofessional staff, with strong language, subject and technical backgrounds, as well as knowledge of standards and best practices
    • Refresh and renew staff through a continuous improvement model, including professional development and mentoring, tapping colleagues at Stanford and in other institutions
