    Part 1: Collection general

    Description
    This collection is the non-archival portion of Joseph Greenberg's gift to the Libraries and consists of such materials as dictionaries, grammars, works on general theoretical linguistics, some anthropology. Monographs and serials; most serials will be deselected. Predominantly in Western European languages, some titles in Russian, Greek and other languages studied in Greenberg's research. Early 20th century imprints for the most part. Generally in good physical condition. Size of collection before de-duping and de-selection: estimated 1,200 titles in 2,000 vols.
    Size of collection after de-duping and de-selection
    About 550 non-Slavic. About 50 Slavic titles remain to be de-duped and evaluated for retention. Most serials were de-selected; some single issue serials may have remained. Sorting, de-duping and other pre-cataloging processing: The sorting and de-duping was carried out by Glen Denny and Billy Bousman and completed by the end of July. De-selection was carried out by the curator. Inventory of items carried out by G&E. Titles, flagged with the required 590 and 690 information, will come to Cataloging without on-line records as part of the regular gifts flow. Contact for technical processing in G&E: Josie Flores. 10/15/01 update: additional dupes (estimated 30%) are being encountered during the processing in MC.

    Storage of un-cataloged collection
    The dupes and non-dupes will remain in the TS Conference Room on Meyer 3rd floor until Mrs. Greenberg has the collection appraised for tax purposes. After the appraisal, the non-dupes will be sent to Cataloging as a whole or in batches as determined by the project leader. 9/14/01 update: No appraisal will take place. Collection ready for processing by MC.

    A total of 373 records were created, with the following results: 58% copy cataloged in MC; 29% had InProcess records for future call number or E/L 3 work by CLASS; 6% were cataloged as copy-assisted; 1% were cataloged at E/L 3 level; 1% were cataloged serials; other titles were cataloged at full/core level or treated as added volumes; 1 title was a video and 1 title was sent to Music.
