SUL Series Authority Records Handbook
Conflicts and choice of qualifier
- Search (NAF, bibliographic file) for conflicts. Add a qualifier
to the series title if there is a conflict.
-
Conflicts:
Series title matches exactly:
- 1XX on an existing SAR.
- 130 on a bibliographic record.
- 245 a on a serial bibliographic record.
- 4XX or 8XX on existing bibliographic records.
- For subseries, the entire title proper (a, n, p)
is considered when testing for conflict.
Examples:
Series title: Serie Medio ambiente. Riesgos geológicos
"Serie Medio ambiente" has a conflict.
"Serie Medio ambiente. Riesgos geológicos" does not have a conflict.
Heading on SAR: 130 0_ Serie Medio ambiente.pRiesgos geológicos [no qualifier needed]
- No conflict:
Series title matches 430 on an existing SAR. In this case, add a qualifier to the 430, and establish your series without a qualifier.
- Don't predict a conflict. Only qualify your series when needed.
- A series heading with a qualifier is always traced in an 830, never in the 4XX in your bibliographic record.

Choice of qualifier
- Choice of qualifier depends on context. Choose an appropriate qualifier that makes the heading unique.
- A series heading that matches the name of a corporate body exactly must always be qualified with: "(Series)". The series must be numbered in order to be considered a series in this case.
Example:
110 2_ Buckinghamshire Records Society [corporate body]
130 _0 Buckinghamshire Records Society (Series) [numbered series]
- A series heading that matches an initialism must be qualified with: "(Series)".
- If the same issuing body publishes both a numbered and unnumbered series with the same title, always add the qualifier "(Unnumbered)" to the unnumbered series, regardless of which series you are establishing.
Example:
130 _0 Opposing viewpoints series [numbered series]
130 _0 Opposing viewpoints series (Unnumbered) [unnumbered series by the same issuing body/same publisher]
- Generic publication titles such as Publication, Bulletin, Report, Occasional paper, etc. are usually qualified by corporate body.
- The qualifier must be given in AACR2 form. Place names are given in the form: City, State or Country.
Examples:
(Paris, France) [not "(Paris)" and not "(Paris (France))"]
(Boston, Mass.) [not "(Boston)" and not "(Boston, MA)" and not "(Boston, Massachusetts)"]
- The form of qualifier must match its established heading in NAF. If the qualifier heading is not in NAF, it needs to be established.
- If the name of the corporate body used as a qualifier changes, a new series authority record is required.
- If the place of publication used as a qualifier of a series changes, a new series authority record is not required, but updated publisher information may be added to the series authority record in the 643 and/or 667. (Updating the 643 or adding a 667 is optional for PCC NACO contributors.)
