    Classed-as-sep (CAS) series

The cataloging policy for "classed-as-sep" (CAS) monographic series was changed in March 2001. Prior to that, classed-as-sep series were cataloged by the Catalog Department and appeared in Socrates. After March 2001, they are no longer cataloged. Instead, they are created as shadowed records by the Monograph Receiving Unit for tracking purposes only. Below is the notification of this policy change to the heads of the Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities and Area Studies resource groups.

Re: Change in treatment of "Class-As-Separate" series records
    Date: March 27, 2001

Currently CAS (class-as-sep) monographic series received on standing orders have bibliographic records created for the series title in addition to the catalog records for individual monographic titles in the series. These CAS series title records help to manage monographic CAS series standing orders in Acquisitions. Their presence in the public catalog is often confusing for our users.

This current treatment of CAS series requires maintenance of the records that cannot be completed in Monographic Receiving. Individual titles that involve any change have to be sent to Cataloging or else there is perceived conflicting bibliographical information.

CHANGE: In order to reduce this confusion and unnecessary workload, we propose that the CAS series records continue to be created and maintained by Monographic Receiving staff for their tracking purposes, but that they be shadowed in Unicorn and therefore not displayed in Socrates. These records will continue to be found in Unicorn using standard search strategies.

We hope this will not present problems. Please forward this note to those concerned in your groups.
