SUL Cataloging Format Integration Implementation Policies: April 1996

    MARC 006 Field

    1. ORIGINAL AND VARIANT EDITION CATALOGING
      • Add 006s to book records to reflect non-book accompanying material
      • Add 006s to reflect the various aspects of multi-format materials.
N.B. Catalogers who catalog non-book material will monitor the creation of multiple 006s for multi-format materials, especially interactive multimedia materials. In fall 1996, we will revisit this decision and determine if we need to develop a limit to the number of 006s we will include in records along with a priority list of material facets to be so represented.
    2. COPY CATALOGING (INCLUDING COPY ASSISTED CATALOGING)
      • Accept copy for print items as is; neither add nor delete 006 fields for non-book accompanying materials.
      • AV catalogers may add 006s to copy for multi-format non-book materials (see N.B. above)

    MARC 007 Field

    1. ORIGINAL AND VARIANT EDITION CATALOGING:
      • Supply 007 fields for booth serials and monographs in the following formats: Maps*, microforms, sound recordings, visual materials, computer files.
      • Do not supply an 007 for non-book accompanying materials on records for monographic print materials
      * 007 will be used for some, but not all maps in accordance with previous policies
    2. COPY CATALOGING (INCLUDING COPY ASSISTED CATALOGING)
      • Accept copy for print items as is; neither add nor delete 007 fields for non-book accompany materials.
      • AV catalogers may add 007s to copy in the formats specified above.

Choice of Primary Focus (i.e. choice of Leader 06 = RT)

    1. MULTI-FORMAT ITEMS: In general, choose primary focus to reflect the physical carrier (e.g., and an 006 to bring out the serials aspect).
