    Non-book Shelf Arrangement Scheme

    Introduction

This document describes the shelf arrangement schemes for most non-book materials, not including serials, manuscripts or Special Collections material. A related document, Microforms with Guides, is in preparation and will describe how to process microforms with accompanying materials. Additional information for processing some types of non-book material are located in separate documents, as noted.

Call numbers for non-book materials shelved in most locations consist of an alphabetical prefix designating the format of the material, followed by a sequence number. The prefix varies by location. For Branner, Art and Cubberly, most non-book materials are assigned LC classification. For non-book material receiving accession numbers, shelf-listing is done on-line by accessing the SUL Accession Number Generator (most Language Lab materials shelf-listed by accessing the SUL Language Lab Accession Number Generator - see Shelf Arrangement Scheme for Language Lab for more information. ). The next available number in sequence in a particular master-list is assigned to the title in cataloging. Reminder: Paste the number returned by the Generator into your record at the point of cataloging or print out for later use to avoid creating a gap on the shelf.

Note: Access to the forms is limited to catalogers who assign accession numbers. If you need access, please contact your supervisor.
