Guidelines for Applying Field 653
to Level 3 Records
Scope
Assign 653 field (uncontrolled index term) to all records in which the words
in the title field do not reflect the subject of the book adequately or the
title is not in English. Exception: do not assign to works of imagination (Novels,
stories, poetry, plays, etc.)

Format
Input the words in a single 653 field.
1st indicator is 0; 2nd indicator is blank.
Use a maximum of three words or very brief phrases
and input each as a separate subfield a.
The order of words is unimportant.
Use |a to separate each keyword term or phrase, with no spaces before or after.
Capitalize the 1st word of the field.
Do not end the field with a mark of punctuation
unless punctuation is part of the date.

1. Use English translation of subject key words from the 245 field.

2. If the 245 field contains words about the subject in English, do not input
a 653 field.
3. If the 245 field does not contain words about the subject of the book,
quickly examine the covers, table of contents, preface, etc. to select appropriate
words. You may also select the key words from the classification schedules
in LC Classifiation Web.

4. Concentrate on words that are rich in meaning; do not use words that are
not, such as "study", "part", "important", "impact".
Omit all conjunctions, prepositions, and articles unless thay are part of
an inseparable phrase (e.g. Breach of promise).
5. Give geographic terms either as adjectives or nouns.
