Derived Original Cataloging of Monographs
1. Derived Original Cataloging (a.k.a. Derived Original) is full/core level of cataloging when there is no record in OCLC’s WorldCat that matches exactly the item in hand and is suitable for copy cataloging. Instead, a record that matches the item in hand closely enough is used to derive the new record. Examples of derived records include:
- different editions by the same publishers
- editions by a different publisher
- reprint and facsimile editions
- photocopies
- translations
- different bibliographic formats
- microforms
- foreign language records
In addition, in order for a record to qualify for Derived Original, it has to include al least one usable LC subject heading (in English).
2. All items that qualify for Derived Original (both new [current 5 yr]) and older imprints), except Belles-Lettres (BL) in Western European languages, should be routed to Derived Original cataloger in the MARC Unit (currently EMK) for cataloging with full authority work (NACO).
3. All Belles-Lettres in Western European languages should be routed to the person responsible for BL cataloging in the Classification Unit (currently DCW). DCW will catalog them or route to EMK according to the following instructions:
- New (current 5 yrs) - record available for Derived Original
- If all access points established in the NAF, DCW catalogs at Full Level (EL <blank>)
- If not all headings established in the NAF, DCW routes to EMK for cataloging with full authority work (NACO)
- New (current 5 yrs) - no record available for Derived Original
- If all access points established in the NAF, DCW catalogs at Full Level (EL <blank>)
- If not all headings established in the NAF, DCW assigns LC classification; record will be recycled
- Imprints older than 5 yrs - record available for Derived Original
- If all access points established in the NAF, DCW catalogs at Full Level (EL <blank>)
- If not all headings established in the NAF, DCW routes to EMK for cataloging with full authority work (NACO)
- Imprints older than 5 yrs - no record available for Derived Original
- DCW catalogs at Abbreviated Level (EL 3)
