How to Create an 006 Field for Accompanying Materials in Unicorn

- To
delete an 006 field from Unicorn
- Go the the Maintain Existing Titles (Modify title) icon on the toolbar.
- Right click on it.
- Click on Properties. This brings up the "Modify title: set properties" screen.
- In the Title/Bibliographic info section, find the box for "add 006"

In the drop down menu, choose the correct type of 006. These are the most common.
- COMPUTER FILE (CD-ROMs and diskettes)
- MUSICAL SOUND REC (music recorded on audio CDs, cassettes, or CD-ROMs in MP3 or other audio format)
- NON-MUSIC SOUND REC (spoken word or non-musical sound on audio- CDs, cassettes, or CD-ROMs in MP3 or other audio format)
- PROJ MEDIUM (videocassettes, video discs--i.e. laser discs, DVDs, or VCD)
- PRT MAP (map on paper, microform, or in electronic format--if in electronic format will also need a second 006 for Computer file
- After choosing the applicable 006, click OK
- Issue the Modify Title command or click on the Maintain Existing Titles icon to add to 006 to the desired bibliographic record.
- When the edit screen appears, the 006 should be in place, with the box labeled TypeCode filled in.
- Without closing the bibliographic record, go back to the Maintain Existing Titles icon and right click.
- Click on Properties.
- Return to the Add 006 box, and from the drop down menu, choose NONE
- Click OK. This will prevent another 006 being added when you next issue the Modify Title command.
- After clicking OK, the edit record should still be on the screen. Click on it to activate the window.

Fill in the applicable 006 fields. There are some fields in the 006 in which a blank is not valid, and will cause an error in RLIN if not filled in. IMPORTANT: One can always use a fill character (delimiter in Unicorn) for "no attempt to code this field." For some of these fields, more than one fill character may be needed. For details and other appropriate codes, see below:
- Please remember: When the Unicorn program is closed, a box will appear which says "Properties have been changed, save changes?" Click No to ignore changes.
Required fields for 006 for various formats
COMPUTER FILE
For computer files, add the following codes:

FileType: choose from
- d - document (text or pdf file)
- i - interactive multimedia
- a - numeric data (usually statistical info in a form that can be manipulated by machine, i.e. not a text file or table)
- c - representational (a map or picture)
- b - computer program (an executable file)
- u - unknown
- Other codes

GovtPub: Though blank is valid, it is desirable to code this field if applicable.
MUSICAL SOUND REC
For musical sound recordings, add the following codes:

Comp: The codes for this field are complicated. If you do not wish to code this field, enter two fill characters.
- mu - multiple types of compositions (e.g. songs and arias, various types of piano pieces)

Format: For a musical sound recording, this should always be coded:
NON-MUSIC SOUND REC
For non-musical sound recordings, add the following codes:

- nn - Not applicable (i.e. not a musical sound recording)

PROJ MED
For video recordings, add the following codes:

Time: use three digits for the number of minutes, e.g. 090 for 90 minutes. Or:

For a printed map, add the following codes:

- f - Separate map supplemental to another work

- Type NONE in the box for TypeCode
- When you enter the record, and reopen the Edit screen, the 006 should be gone.
