    Copy number assignment policy

Below is SUL's policy re the assignment of copy number when adding copies and volumes to an existing Symphony record.

For added copy, the basic policy is to accept the copy number automatically assigned by Symphony, which has the following result:

    1. If the copy requires the creation of a new call number record, either because it is in a different library, or because it is in the same library but has a different call number, its copy number would be 1.

    2. If the copy is to be added to an existing call number record, Symphony would assign the next higher copy number to the new record, and it should be accepted. For example, a new copy is being added to GREEN, which already has a copy 4 with the same call number. In this case, the new copy will be copy 5.

For added volume, the basic policy is to use the copy number of the copy that the volume is being added to. For example, if a volume is being added to GREEN copy 5, the new volume's copy number should also be 5.
