    Word search

    Words can be in separate fields, in any order

    Words can be in separate fields, in any order

    Multiple words are treated as phrase, i.e. word order is important. Use AND to search multiple words in any order or in separate fields.

    Phrase search

    Can truncate in the middle of a title phrase. Extends across subfields, e.g. 245 |a|b.

    Can truncate in the middle. Enclose in double quotes if AND, OR, NOT, SAME, WITH, NEAR is present in phrase. Extends across subfields, e.g. 245 |a|b.

    Phrase can occur anywhere within a subfield. Cannot do a left-anchored phrase search. Enclose in double quotes if AND, OR, NOT, SAME, WITH, NEAR is present in phrase. Phrase cannot extend across subfields, e.g. 245|a|b.

    Truncation

    Truncation symbol is $ in title search. In Pubdate, truncation symbol is *

    Truncation symbol is #. Can truncate in the middle of a phrase. If phrase enclosed in double quotes, include truncation symbol within quotes.

    Truncation symbol is ? When used, enclose search term in double quotes. This truncation works only on words. Phrase can occur anywhere within a subfield.

    Personal name

    A word search may find last name in one field and first name in another.

    RLIN treats last word as surname unless there is a comma. Matching is imprecise. Both initials and full forename match either initials or full forenames.

    Put last name first. Word order is important as multiple word search terms are treated as a phrase.

    Corporate name

    Phrase search does not have to start from the beginning of the heading. The phrase can be anywhere within the heading. It cannot be truncated.

    Can truncate in the middle of a corporate name.

    Cannot truncate in the middle. Search term is searched as a phrase anywhere in a subfield. Use AND to search multiple subfields.

    Title

    Can search 245 |a and |b at the same time. In phrase search, exclude all initial articles.

    Search 245 |a or |b. Phrase cannot cross subfield boundaries.
