Unicorn Searches Limited by Matching on Exact, Keyword or Partial
When doing a Catalog Lookup in Unicorn, click on "Limit" and then on the pull-down menu "Match on" to choose a Keyword, Partial or Exact search. Note that if the "Match on" box is left blank, the default is a Keyword search.
1. Keyword
Keyword searches match on single words located anywhere within a single field of a bibliographic record.
Example: Find SUBJECT = citrus strikes finds records with both the words "strikes" and "citrus" in a single subject heading.
2. Exact
Exact searches match on fields in a bibliographic record which contain the complete phrase used in the search.
Example: Find TITLE = oranges finds records with titles that begin with the word "oranges" and have no additional words in the title. (Works like Socrates title phrase search ending with a period.)
3. Partial
Partial searches match on fields in a bibliographic record which begin with the phrase used in the search.
Example: Find TITLE= oranges finds records with titles that begin with "oranges" and may have additional words following it in the title.
NOTE: If a Partial search finds no matching items, the result will be a "Browsing the Catalog" screen.
4. Phrase in single quotes
Unicorn searches may also be qualified by placing the search term in single quotes (without using "Limit" or "Match on"). This will match on fields in bibliographic records which contain the given phrase anywhere within the field, not necessarily at the beginning of the field.
Example: Find TITLE= 'oil fields' finds records that contain the phrase "oil fields" anywhere within a title.
