035
We are in the process of resuming export to OCLC. When OCLC receives
our Symphony records, they send them
through a "unique-key matching algorithm" to determine if a matching
record exists in the OCLC database.
The first choice in this algorithm is an OCLC control number found
in the 035 field. If one is found, our symbol is
attached to that record; no additional verification is done using
other data elements.
Note that when we download a record from OCLC using SmartPort,
the OCLC control number is put in the 001 field,
and not the 035 field. These 001's are not included in the records
that we export to OCLC, so these are not the records
that we are concerned about. Typically, a record with an OCLC number
in the 035 is a record that we download from RLIN.
Since an OCLC 035 determines which OCLC record our symbol is attached
to, it is important to remember that if a record is modified at
the point of cataloging because the item received is actually of
a different edition or version (e.g. microform instead of paper),
you should check to see if the record has an OCLC 035, and
if it does you should delete it, or our symbol will be attached
to the wrong record.
Such deletion will have to be done manually even when you update
the record by overlaying it with another record through SmartPort,
as the 035 field is defined as a local field, which means that it
is not removed when a record is overlaid.
