Definitions and Acronyms
AACR2 - Anglo-American Cataloging
Rules, 2nd ed., 1988 revision.
ANALYZED MULTIPART ITEM - (previously
locally called analyzed terminal set): a monograph consisting of
parts which can stand alone independently of the set and for which
individual bibliographic records are created. A bibliographic record
for the set itself is created if the parts, usually numbered, are
classified together. A bibliographic record for the set is not created
if the parts, numbered or unnumbered, are classified separately.
A series authority record is created in either case stating, among
other things, the classification and analysis practices.
ANALYZED SERIAL - a serial for which
individual issues have distinctive titles and their own bibliographic
records (in addition to the bibliographic record for the main serial
of which they are a part) although they share the classification
number which is assigned for the main serial. The numerical designation
of the individual issue is added at the end of the call number on
the corresponding individual record. While in processing, they can
be identified by the campus messenger flag inserted in the item.
Analyzed serials can also be identified by the note "Individual
vols. of this title also cataloged separately" in Symphony.
AUTHORITY RECORD - an LC or NACO
authority record that resides in the NAF file or the Symphony authority
file; SUL catalogers will not create authority records in the local
Symphony authority file, but will create NACO authority records in
RLIN that will be incorporated into our local Symphony authority
file via our authority vendor. In this way, our authority vendor
will be able to maintain a record of all our authority records in
order to comprehensively update our file through their notification
service.
BFM - Bibliographic File Maintenance.
BIBCO - Bibliographic Record Cooperative
Program.
CAS SERIAL (Classed as separate serial)
- a serial for which the individual issues have distinctive titles
and their own bibliographic records (in addition to the bibliographic
record for the main serial of which they are a part) with separate
classification appropriate to their distinctive subject matter.
While in processing, they can be identified by means of the campus
messenger flag inserted in the item. Also, the series bibliographic
record will have the phrase "CALL # VARIES" instead of a call number.
DERIVED
ORIGINAL CATALOGING (formerly called variant edition cataloging)
- full and intermediate/core levels of cataloging when, in the absence
of matching copy, copy for a related edition is found (e.g., revised
edition, edition by a different publisher, reprint and facsimile
editions, translation and microform and other formats editions).
Also included are records created for serial title changes that
are based on records for earlier/later titles, as well as other
serials records that are based on related copy.
ENHANCED
COPY CATALOGING (formerly called copy assisted cataloging)
- all levels of cataloging based on matching copy that require adding
classification number or subjects. Changes in descriptive cataloging
and additional access points may also be made if necessary, but
such changes alone do not constitute enhanced copy cataloging (e.g.,
improvements in 300 field, supplying critical omissions, adding
local access points).
(Enhancing to PCC level will be dealt with in a separate future
document)
ILC - Intermediate Level Cataloging.
LC - Library of Congress.
LCRIs - Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations.
LCSH - Library of Congress Subject
Headings.
NACO - Name Authority Cooperative
Project.
NAF - National Authority File.
NAR - Name Authority Record.
ORIGINAL CATALOGING - all levels
of cataloging that are created originally, i.e., are not based on
matching copy or copy for a related edition or title, including
earlier/later serial title. Copy without both subjects and usable
classification number is not usable copy and should be treated as
original cataloging.
PCC - Program for Cooperative Cataloging.
RLG - Research Libraries Group.
RLIN - Research Libraries Information
Network.
SACO - Subject Authority Cooperative
Program.
