Serials Access & Maintenance
What We Do
The Serials Access & Maintenance Unit sets up serial control records in the ILS database for online check-in for newly acquired serial titles in various formats and languages including electronic journals. We maintain and resolve complex problems with the serial control record when a journal has a change in publication frequency, a change of subscription vendor, a change in title, a change in format, a change in shelving location, a cancellation by the selector, or ceases publication altogether. Additionally, the staff receives the first issue of newly acquired serials that have been directly ordered from vendors or publishers, supplied through our approval programs or purchased in other non-standard ways.
The staff in the unit also performs limited basic cataloging functions such as updating the cataloged bibliographic record for serial titles that cease publication, updating the MARC holdings record for serial titles cancelled by the selector, serial titles ceased publication, and serial titles transferred to a new shelving location. We identify serial titles that have a title change, title varies, or format change and route the material or paper work to the appropriate cataloging unit for bibliographic record maintenance.
