How Do I Find?

Magazines and Journal Articles

Go to the Stanford Libraries Homepage (http://library.stanford.edu)

1. Under Catalogs and Databases choose Databases.
2. Select Expanded Academic ASAP.
3. Select Proceed.
   

Search starts by looking for assigned subject headings:

• Use one or two words.
• For apostrophes ('), try with and without. The database is inconsistent.
• Do not use and, or or not.

If your search words match subject headings:

You get a list of these headings which you can view or narrow by using a subdivision.
For example, you can view the more than 2000 articles under Afghanistan Conflict, 2001, or you can choose narrow and view only those with the subheading anecdotes, cartoons, satire, etc.

If your search words do not match subject headings:

Your search is automatically redone as a keyword search, searching articles for your word(s).

Combining terms:

Select a keyword search (from the left-hand frame) if you wish to combine terms using the Boolean AND, OR, NOT.
For example, afghanistan and women. (If you do this search as a Subject search, you get only those headings that include both words — much too narrow.)

Results can include:

• Citation — the article's author and title, journal/magazine title, date, volume and pages.
• Abstract — citation, plus brief description of the article.
• Text — citation, plus full text of the article.
• Text with graphics — gives choice of full text with graphics inserted or a PDF copy of the original article.

  At the end of the citation or text, you get assigned subject headings for that article which link to other articles with that heading.

If you don't get fulltext online:

1. Copy — the article's author and title, journal/magazine title, date, volume and pages.
2. Open a new browser window and go to Socrates.
3. Within Socrates
• Select Browse.
• Enter journal/magazine title.
• Select Periodical Title button.
• Select your title from the resulting list.
• Look for the location and call number. (In some cases, this means selecting the View status and complete call number information link.)

To mail or print:

1. Mark the items you want to mail or print by checking inside the little box next to the title.
2. Choose View Mark List in left-hand frame.
3. Use options at the bottom of the page to reformat for printing.
4. Use the Print button on IE or Netscape to print.
