Interlibrary Lending
The regulations on this page do not apply to those libraries
participating in cooperative
agreements with Stanford University Libraries.
Crown Law,
Jackson
Business, Lane Medical Library's DocXpress,
SLAC, and Hopkins
Marine Station libraries provide their own interlibrary loan
services and should be contacted directly.
To Request Material from Stanford University Libraries
Libraries, organizations, and companies may request materials from Stanford University Libraries using our electronic request form.
- A library must serve as an intermediary: Interlibrary Lending does not supply materials directly to individuals.
- Interlibrary Lending does not accept requests via OCLC, Ariel, e-mail, fax, mail, telephone, or ALA forms.
- Verify citations via Searchworks. Requests must have the call number and the holding SUL library.
Average Turnaround Time
- 3 to 7 working days.
- Does not include time in transit to borrowing institution.
Collections
- Length of loan - 4 weeks after date of receipt at borrowing
institution.
- A maximum of two renewals is allowed. Some items are not renewable.
- No postage charge except for UPS or 2nd/next day service.
- Materials from Media
& Microtext and Special
Collections and University Archives are not available through
interlibrary loan except to ShaRes members and University
of California libraries.
- Branner
Earth Sciences library materials circulate upon the approval of its librarian. Its electronic datasets are non-circulating.
Periodicals
- Not lent except on microfilm.
Newspapers
- Not lent except on microfilm.
Stanford Doctoral Dissertations
- Dissertations written after September 2009, unless embargoed by the author, should be electronically available via Searchworks for all requesting libraries.
*Embargoed dissertations written from September 2009 forward do not circulate.
- All dissertations written through August 2009 circulate exclusively to the University of California libraries and SHARES members.
- Dissertations written between 1953-August 2009, unless embargoed, should be available to all other requesting libraries from University Microfilms International
*Embargoed dissertations written between 1953-August 2009 are loaned upon approval to U.S. and Canadian libraries.
May 3, 2013er may be loaned to requesting libraries within the United States and Canada.

Master's Theses

- Lent or copied (subject to copyright restrictions).
- Many computer science technical reports are available from the
Stanford University Computer
Science Electronic Library over the World Wide Web.
Computer Software
Government Documents
- United States publications lent (Depository since 1895).
- State government publications lent (Depository since 1968).
- United Nations publications lent (Depository since 1945).
- Foreign government publications lent.
Microforms
- Microfilms and microfiche lent.
- Microprint (Readex) not lent.
Media Materials
- Media does not circulate except to ShaRes members or University
of California libraries.
- Approval of the Media Librarian is required prior to loan.
Hard Copies from Microforms
- Copy service is available but lending is preferred. Charged
as a photocopy.
Charges
Loans to libraries and non-profit institutions are charged on a reciprocal
basis. Loans to corporations and for-profit organizations are charged
$25.00 per item lent. Photocopies are charged as outlined below:
- 1-20 pages = $10.00.
- 21 -49 pages = $25.00.
- over 50 pages = $50.00.
- Handling charge = $7.50.
- Postage charge U.S. = $5.00 min; Foreign = $10.00 min.
- All charges must be paid by check in United States currency.
*Photocopy charges vary when outsourced to the campus photocopy service.
*All loans and photocopies are charged for handling and shipping.
Billing
- Interlibrary Lending reserves the right to receive payment in full before material is shipped.
- No postage stamps or coupons accepted as payment.
- Invoices are due upon receipt. Non-payment will result in loss
of service.
Packing Requirements for Mailing
- Jiffy bags are not acceptable.
- Insurance may be required for special items.
Loans to Foreign Libraries
- No loans are provided to libraries outside the United States
and Canada except to ShaRes members.
- Photocopies may be provided subject to U.S. Copyright Law.
